Cut back the old flower stems as the colour fades, and re-pot each year in a peat based compost to which has been added aluminium sulphate or a proprietory colourant if you want the flowers to be blue. Cuttings of young shoots can be rooted with fair success. Older plants which are growing in tubs or similar large containers need not be re-potted each year like the young plants. Instead, carefully remove the loose compost and top dress with a fresh mixture with extra fertilizer added. By thinning out the flowering shoots as they develop, those which are left produce much larger flowers.
